O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early part of 2005, when she was still a high school student. She made it to the top 100 round since the judges were impressed at her singing performance. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by jury. But, O'Neil suffered a significant defeat during the Top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she got votes for top 3, and the bottom 2. The judges were awed by her performance and suggested viewers choose singers who were well-known like Melissa. O'Neil's performance was so impressive that she never placed in the lower three in the future. With two other stunning performances on the 7th of September 2005, when O'Neil as well as Rex Goudie made it to the final two contestants, the judge Werner said that newspaper headlines will read: O'Neil defeated Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and also the most youthful winner in the competition's record . O'Neil received a rousing ovation from Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
