O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, and graduated from Wheaton North High School in the year 1981. The model was featured on several television commercials, before moving from Illinois to Los Angeles. O'Grady started her career by modelling at Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She starred in the 1988 romantic comedic film called She's Having a Baby. She was later a regular in ABC Drama China Beach with Dana Delany.
